PREDICTION OF HIGH WATER IN VENICE

18 sirens are used since 1968 to warn population of high waters. They are activated about 3 hours in advance when the Center predicts a very high tide (more than 120 cm, flooding about 12% of downtown Venice). Further acoustic warning are given out as soon as is's possible to predict an exceptional tide (height up to 140 cm and 90% of the city flooded). Finally the sirens are used again when the tides exceed 160 cm.
